A Fantasy Campaign Setting

Way back in the 1980s when I was a Commodore gaming nerd (I still sorta am today), I started creating a fictional fantasy world that I wrote some short stories within. I think I was motivated by not only C64 games such as The Bard’s Tale, but also by the Thieves World novel, “Tales From the Vulgar Unicorn,” in particular, as a sandbox setting for authors to use to write stories. I wanted to create my own world for the stories I chose to tell. In addition to this, I had also come across Gary Gygax’s “Word of Greyhawk” D&D campaign setting and fell in love with it. It was just more icing on the cake to make me want to create my own setting.

The World of Highfall

Thus, Highfall was born. Highfall, or what I would later come to call, The World of Highfall, is a dark and seedy low magic fantasy setting in a world that went through a terrible calamity 250 years before. Civilization prior to the event had been well established across the world’s many continents, and then WHAMO… ninty percent of the world population dies off whan ash falls from the sky, the sun is blotted out for years, plants and animals die, crops fail, disease ensues… you know how it is… the end of the world, that old nut-shell.

Bringing It Forward!

Fast forward to now, and that world I created has been used in a score of short stories and novellas I had written over the years – none of those stories are worth publishing, they are pulp trash and poorly written. However, the actual campaign setting, I feel, is fantastic and should be shared with TTRPGers.

So that is my plan!

I am currently working on cleaning up all my old documents I have written on The World of Highfall and putting it into book form. I need to find an artists to create some cool as sh*t black and white retro fantasy art to incude in the book, because I don’t think my crappy stick-figure scratches will go the distance.

I am also intending to write and design a TTRPG campaing that consists of 5-7 adventures in the setting. I largly already have the adventures in place, I just need to write them for either Dungeon Crawl Classics game mechanics.

The intent at this time is to do a low goal cash funding campaign on Kickstarter to raise the money to hire an artist, but that could change if my friend, Shrewbe (that’s his handle, not his real name), would agree to do the art because he owes me! Yeah, talking ’bout you Shrew!

My Patreon

I intend to onlt share a limited amount of information about my TTRPG design informaiton here on this website. As I will need to pay artists for lots of fantasy art to be included in my DCC 3rd Party Publications, I have a setup a PATREON in order to (hopefully) find some followers who will be interested in supporting my efforts. My patreon can found here: ASGARD GAMEWERKS PATREON FOR DUNEGON CRAWL CLASSICS.
